2011 Scheduled Work Details
To all members: Report times for all work details is 9:30 AM at appropriate locations.

March 26, 2011
- A work detail has been scheduled at Black Bear Trailhead. All volunteers should report there. We plan to trim brush around the parking area and along the trail to the viaduct bridge, and weed eating.

April 2, 2011 - A work detail has been scheduled at the Gillentown Trailhead. Installation of signs, some brush trimming, and trash collection will take place. Also work in preparation for the Spaghetti Dinner (on April 16, 2011) will be done.

April 30, 2011 - A work detail has been scheduled at the Gillentown Trailhead. Painting and trimming brush, etc. will take place.

Lunch and beverages will be provided. Please bring any tools that you feel are appropriate for the work described above.





April 10 UPDATE: Efforts were put forth to clean up a dump site between the Moshannon Community Center and the Gillentown Trailhead. All those that supported the cleanup were: PA Cleanways, Centre County Solid Waste Authority, Snow Shoe Rails to Trails, and the Centre County Probation Office. A great job done by all to clean up the environment.

June 6, 2009
Brian & Brandon McDowell, Lee Paige, John Spicer, Larry Mayes installed split rail fence on both sides of the restroom at Gillentown Trailhead. Trilby Mayes painted the tops of bollards in front of restroom and also the gate near the 144 tunnel. Below are pictures of the project.

                       

April 25, 2009
There was a great turnout by members and with the help of the Centre County Probation Office, the trail received a lot of attention.

Eric Brooks and Larry Mayes painted lines on the Rush Township Casanova Road below the Black Bear Trailhead. They also had several volunteers pick up trash from the bottom parking area at Black Bear Bridge towards Black Bear Nursery and on road to Casanova Nostalgia for a short piece and the Black Bear Trailhead.

Greg Wolgemuth worked with a group planting Colorado Spruce (purchased from Penn State) for a border between the Gillentown parking lot and the trail. He then did some brushing towards Clarence.

Dave Mishshock took a group to install signs from Gillentown to end of trail near Orviston.

Leroy and Tucker Hake, Kyle Vangor and others, hauled water for newly planted trees and brushed trail towards Clarence.

A group from the probation office unbolted used sign posts provided by Eric Brooks, swept highway entrance at Gillentown Trailhead, sealed one half of concrete including ladies restroom, painted bollards at restroom, loading ramp and all of the long fence along the Gillentown parking lot.

                               

Centre County Probation Office provided workers to assist with trail enhancements. The following members of the SSRTA provided leadership for various projects that included sign installation, brushing along trail, digging out tree stumps and re-routing road, installing bollards at restroom. Charles Kling, Dave Mishock, Leroy Hake, Eric & Peg Brooks, Seth Confer, Brandon & Brian McDowell, Chuck Colyer, Trilby & Larry Mayes, George Holt, and Eileen & Terry Long.


                         

Work Detail Held on April 4, 2009

Work included brushing and cutting trees to entrance to Gillentown Trailhead and adjacent to newly installed restrooms. Trash removal from Tarman Crossing to Clarence. Raking and seeding area around newly installed restrooms.

George Holt, Ken Mehallow, Leroy Hake, Seth Confer, Eric Brooks, Larry & Trilby Mayes lead the workers from Centre County Probation Office to perform the enhancements to the trail.

Jim Verost provided his skid steer to haul and place number 4 stone in poor drainage areas near 144 tunnel.

We want to thank Judge Tom Kistler and Ron Millward for the assistance in coordinating manpower for this work detail.

rk Detail Held on October 8, 2008

Members planting shrubs purchased from Black Bear Nursery to enhance the Gillentown Trailhead entrance. Funds were made available from the Centre County Community Foundation.

Centre County Probation/Parole Department

The Centre County Probation/Parole Department is providing manpower to assist with the development of the Gillentown Trailhead and further development of the Snow Shoe Rails to Trails. Displayed below are actual photos of work being performed.

Work Detail Held on April 7, 2007
This is a great chance for people to see work being done on the Gillentown Trailhead and trail. Duties included building loading/unloading ramps, started building kiosk as you leave Gillentown Trailhead parking area and access trail and installing signs on the trail and collecting garbage/litter from trail.

                                             


Work Detail Held on April 14, 2007
SSRT members and community service work together collecting litter, removing metal posts from trail, installing signs, and cutting trees and brush from road leading to non-motorized parking area.

                                               


Work Detail Held on April 28, 2007
Steve Harkin (PAATV) and Chuck Colyer worked with the Centre County Community Service (CCCS) workers to build new kiosk at Gillentown Trailhead. Brian and Brandon McDowell and George Leigey worked with the CCCS workers to finish building loading ramp. Eric Brooks lead the CCCS workers to install signs along the trail. Mike Ostroskie lead the CCCS workers to clean drains and spray wood preservative on the Number 10 bridge.

 Construction of Peale Tunnel Completed  October 2005 !  


Dick Rockey, George Holt, Scott Eminhizer, and Trilby Mayes installing
acknowledgement signs at Gillentown Trailhead on Saturday, November 12, 2005.
  They placed a snowman and Santa Claus sign riding an ATV at the Gillentown
 Trailhead sign.  These were donated by Lee Williamson.




$2,500 of limestone was placed at the Gillentown Trailhead. The stone was procured with some
of the funds accumulated from the 2005 ATV raffle. Thanks for those people that sold and
purchased tickets for the ATV. Your support is used to benefit all of us that utilize the trail.

 



Perry Mason recently purchased two power saws from True Value Hardware in Snow Shoe. They will be used by members for trimming brush on or along the trail. One saw will be stored at Munson with Dick Rockey and the other saw will be stored at Gillentown with Trilby Mayes.  Anyone seeing brush or trees that could be a safety issue or anyone wanting  to perform some trimming along the trail can sign a saw out through one of the executive officers.

        New signage made by vinyl concepts and installed by Dick Rockey and George Holt.

No dates have been confirmed for the following work details. As we plan and confirm dates, we will send out an email notification or place work detail dates in upcoming newsletters.

Spring Cleanup of trash and debris, and trim or remove brush that is or could become a safety issue.

We will replace several 24 inch diameter drainage pipes near Rock Run and another near Tarman's Crossing.

We will install gates and bollards at Tarman's Crossing.

 


Pictures above is our newly purchased trailer to be used for work done on the trail.


Please obey all signs along the trail. They are for your safety as well as the safety of fellow trail users.
